Schrödinger Maestro in Virtual Reality for HMDs, SteamVR, OpenXR, Powerwall and CAVE

This quick guide shows the necessary configuration steps to bridge Schrödinger Maestro into Virtual Reality for SteamVR and OpenXR compatible Head Mounted Displays (HMD) like Oculus Rift, Meta Quest 1, 2 and 3, HTC Vive (Pro), HTC Focus, HP Reverb, Varjo, Pico, and Windows Mixed Reality. The guide also applies for bridging Schrödinger Maestro for Powerwalls, 3D stereo projectors, CAVEs and DOME.

Start the moreViz Launcher

  • Notice the moreViz-Tray icon (next to system time) and right-click it, select “moreViz Application Enabler”
  • Click “Locate known Apps”. The more3D application enabler will search the standard program files folders for known Schrödinger Maestro installations and add them to the list.
  • If your Schrödinger Maestro is installed to a non standard directory, please click “Add”, locate the “maestro.exe” file. It is usually located in “C:\Program Files\Schrodinger\maestro-v14.5\bin\Windows-x64”
  • Place the checkmark in the “enabled” column for Schrödinger Maestro.
    Close the Application Enabler.
  • Start Schrödinger Maestro.
  • Click on Edit -> Preferences
  • In the left list select “Graphics”, set “OpenGL Level” to “Best” and uncheck “Full scene Antialiasing” and uncheck “GPU-accelerated transparency”.
  • Exit Schrödinger Maestro.
  • Start the moreViz Client.
  • Start Schrödinger Maestro and load a 3D Model.
  • The 3D View of Maestro is now live bridged into VR. In case the visualization in moreViz / Virtual Reality does not respond to head movement or controller input, move the 3D view in Maestro slightly, this will trigger a clean frame and working rendering in moreViz.

Quick Tipps:

  • For best loading / animation performance set the “Connection Type” to “Shared Memory” in the moreViz Launcher’s Connection Settings (only available for single-client setups, e.g. HMD or ASD on the local computer).

  • For best visual impression, set “AntiAliasing” to 4x (or higher) in the moreViz Launcher’s Client Settings

  • Quadro / Laptop Users: Make sure to have followed the GPU Config Guide.

  • To change the active VR window within the host application, please follow this quick video tutorial:
